What made you choose Human Services and Social Justice as a major?
It was the writing for social change in my University Writing class for freshman year – I loved the service- learning component
I liked learning by action, by doing
What do you like about service-learning?
I like that I can apply what I’m learning and see it in a real-life experience
Hands-on learning in real time
It pays off now instead of at some point in the future
What do you plan to do after graduation?
I’ll probably work for a tech start up in some sort of Human Resources field
I also want to work on a 2020 presidential campaign
How is this class preparing you for that?
It’s helping me tune into what strengths and weaknesses I have and what concerns I have for the job market
It’s really comforting to hear that my classmates have the same concerns I have and that I’m not alone in that
It’s cool to hear about all of the other things my classmates are doing and how everyone in our major is going to implement change differently in many different markets
Tell me about your “Learning by Giving” experience so far.
I think people donate and give when they believe in something so much that you want to see it implemented
I feel confident in this project, so I want to sustain it with the money that we’re donating
It’s cool that we can create change or support something that we believe in
What are you getting out of this class?
I’m learning a lot about myself and how I can market myself to the job I want to go into
I like the foundation because it can be very difficult and frustrating – and that is the real world of group projects
I like how do we make decisions in a big group of people – we are gaining a lot of group work experience and decision making skills from this class
I feel like people already feel comfortable speaking and giving opinions in class – I think that’s really important that people feel engaged and empowered, and I think that will continue to increase throughout the class
What do you feel like you still have left to learn?
Learning about the evaluation of the grants, because it’s going to be difficult to do as a group
There are also going to be biases – and we have to learn how to navigate that, we have to learn how to critique organizations and nonprofits that we support
I am also learning more about other job fields that I could go into – I am learning about what other classmates are going into and where I would also be interested in going into – I am using them as my inspiration
