What I've learned in HSSJ

Throughout my time in the Human Services and Social Justice major I’ve taken a lot of classes about the non-profit sector, how to write a grant, and proper evaluation tactics to keep in mind when evaluating organizations. While much of this information has been focused on nonprofit management, my interests and experience in internships throughout my 4 years of college has veered itself more toward corporate Human Resources work. Even though my internships have been more “unconventional” for the major, the classes I’ve taken have helped me learn how to be a better employee in the workplace. The Human Services and Social Justice major has taught me a lot about being analytical, organized, and driven to make change. With this, I’ve been able strengthen my interests which has helped me find the best job for me. Knowing my passions and interests that I’ve developed through the major has helped me to be picky when applying for internships and jobs. I’ve been able to hone in on my core values and search for organizations that share and support these values. Additionally, through this major I’ve learned that while I work well in a corporate Human Resources world, I still prefer to work in an organization that has a strong culture of working together toward a strong mission which is the culture of the Human Services and Social Justice major.
