Creating the Evaluation Rubric

When I signed up to be part of the Inspire Up evaluation committee, I had no idea the attention-to-detail that would be required. While our foundation has not started reading applications, we had to create a rubric with which to grade them. Creating the rubric was an unexpectedly long task; our organization spent a while discussing criteria, weighting metrics, and dispersement of standards (whether we wanted to send our rubric out to applying organizations). We spent a few hours in a committee meeting deciding on the aforementioned items, and then spent more time as an entire foundation, reviewing and critiquing further. This made not only made the rubric-crafting process a lesson in grant evaluation, but in teamwork and collaboration. While it took us a significant amount of time (multiple class periods) to reach final decisions on the various aspects of our grading criteria, our ability to collaborate and listen to one another makes me confident that the system we decided on will yield great results. Excited to see what’s to come!
